Coronavirus (COVID-19) - SLAM Actions - Updated 13/05/2020

In line with advice from IAM RoadSmart, SLAM have with immediate effect (17/03/2020) taken the following actions to help protect members from the Covid-19 virus:

• Immediate cessation of Associate training, including observed rides and group training sessions (classroom, machine control and test brief).
• Cancellation of all face to face SLAM Social meetings - but keep an eye out for online events that we will be organising on a regular basis.
• Cancellation of all SLAM organised rides.

Government guidance for “lockdown" has recently been changed, notably with respect to leisure activity. The recent MCN article we wrote to you about gives more details. Please remember, you must still maintain social distancing at all times. Sadly, this still does not change the position for SLAM activities at present.

When you first go out on your bike, please take extra care as you will not have ridden for some time, and other road users - bikers and motorists will all be in the same position. Remember, for the past few weeks, pedestrians and cyclists having become used to having the roads to themselves!

We will of course update you further as the situation develops, and we understand how we will be able to start activities again.

Stay safe

SLAM Chair

SLAM organises regular Ride Outs for the enjoyment of members who are expected to ride at all times to the IAM Advanced Rider Standard.

When you take part in a SLAM Organised Ride you are responsible for ensuring that you comply with the following statement:

  • I confirm that I am the holder of a valid current driving licence, have appropriate Insurance, MOT (if required) and tax for the vehicle I am using.
  • I have carried out the relevant checks to ensure that my vehicle is roadworthy.
  • I am fit to ride and not under the influence of any drug (including prescribed medication) that may adversely affect my fitness to ride.
  • I will bring any relevant health issue to the attention of the Ride Leader.
  • I will wear corrective eyewear while riding if my eyesight requires it.
  • I am aware that I am responsible for my own safety, for all my riding decisions and compliance with the law.

Note that if, in the opinion of the Ride Leader, a rider endangers others or acts in a way that would bring the IAM and SLAM into disrepute, the rider will be advised to rectify the actions immediately and may be excluded from continuing with the group ride.

We take road safety seriously - we hope you do too.
